Magical East Africa

Tanzania and Kenya are two of the most popular travel destinations in East Africa. In addition to safaris in the Serengeti National Park, which has the world's highest density of wildlife, eastern Africa has many other spectacular natural sights to behold. Tanzania, for example, is home to the 5895-meter-high Kilimanjaro, as well as the magnificent volcanic crater Ngorongoro. And off its coast lies the beautiful island of Zanzibar, otherwise known as the spice island. Zanzibar is a famous wedding destination and offers excellent scuba-diving and deep-sea fishing experiences.

Serengeti

The Serengeti is a 30 000 km2 savanna that stretches from northern Tanzania to southern Kenya and has one of highest concentration of mammals on earth. Be sure to witness the mighty herds thunder across the Serengeti plains in the annual great migration. While the dates of the migration vary each year, the best time to visit is from July to October when Kenya and Tanzania are at their driest.

Ngorongoro Crater

From zebras to the big five, this crater in Tanzania is home to a wide variety of animals and is also known to have the highest density of predators in Africa including lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas and jackals. Bernhard Grzimek, veterinarian, animal filmmaker and long-time director of the Frankfurt Zoo, described the Ngorongoro Crater as the ‘largest natural zoo in the world’. The best time to visit is from July to October.

Gorilla Trekking

While both Uganda and Rwanda offer the opportunity of meeting mountain gorillas, the experiences do differ to some degree. Rwanda is traditionally seen as the ‘easier’ gorilla trekking destination as the thinner vegetation makes hiking less intense and gorilla sightings more frequent. Gorilla trekking permits are more expensive here, 1500 USD versus 600 USD in Uganda (subject to change), however unlike in Uganda where one has the option of pre-booking the gorilla family one wants to see, in Rwanda the decisions are made on the morning of the trek. Both permits entitle you to a one-hour visit with the gorilla family. Of the two, Uganda is perhaps the more comprehensive safari destination in that it offers the opportunity of seeing a wider range of animals. However, if you’re only interested in seeing the mountain gorillas, Rwanda would be a great choice for you. The best time to visit both countries is during their two dry seasons, between December and early February, and between June and August.
